Managing Your Fraternity With a Greek Life App

You want to recruit the best students to be a part of your fraternity. If that’s your goal, then you in return need to manage a fraternity that offers pledges a great experience. You can do that by using a greek life app such as OurHouse to manage your fraternity, and also by eliminating the ugly side of frat life — hazing.

If you have a hazing past, be open about it. Unfortunately my fraternity do have a past of hazing. The important word is “past” not present. If there are rumors afloat that your chapter used to haze or did haze it can be effective to share that yes you did haze, but you fixed it by doing a…b…c… and resorting again your newest members or current new member class to provide assurance that hazing is no longer occurring.

Find their exact concerns. Usually the concerns can go much deeper than hazing. By someone saying quickly “I do not want to be hazed.” Simply respond “neither would I nor would we haze anyone, what are your specific concerns with our new member education process?”

Now that you have put the ball into their court in asking them for specific worries you can now talk about the specific benefits of your new member program that will both address their specific concerns and shed truth on what really happens during new member education.

A great indication of how successful someone will be in your fraternity is how proactive they are in meeting brothers at recruiting events. If they are trying to get to know people instead of waiting to be approached, then that is a good sign of character.

Also, notice how comfortable they are at recruiting events. If they are too comfortable, that is a red flag! They should feel nervous, a bit uncomfortable, but still show some signs of confidence. As mentioned, it’s not all up to pledges to do the selling. You need to make it known why your fraternity (or sorority) is the one they should choose. A good selling point is that you run a well organized frat. You can do that by incorporating a Greek life app such as OurHouse in your chapter management. OurHouse handles all event planning, meal planning, and communication between fraternity members. And much more.

As mentioned at collegeboard.org, if they speak too casually to brothers and act like they are already in after attending all the recruiting events, it shows that they don’t have much respect for your fraternity or may not think being in your fraternity is an honor or a big deal. People like this tend to turn into deadweight once they become a brother – people who don’t do jack.

These are just some short simple ways to beat the stereotypes of hazing. It is easiest to be open about what is in your new member education program. It can also be most effective to have your newest or currently pledging class to talk about the program and what they experienced. If rumors are out there of what you chapter has done in the past it is best to directly and concisely confront it. Finally it is important to ask their specific concerns so you can address them and shed light on the true nature of your program.

Again, if your chapter does haze it is important to address this at large in your chapter. Hazing has no place in Greek life if we wish for our organizations to have a sustainable bright future.
